Qld: Coffee grounds for protest

Protesters seeking a better deal for overseas coffee growers have dumped a load ofbeans outside the Australian Stock Exchange's Brisbane office.

Oxfam Community Aid Abroad organised a procession of donkeys and ponies laden withcoffee sacks through the CBD, ending at the ASX's office.

The protest targeted US food giant Kraft, which produces coffee brands Maxwell House and Jacobs.

Protest spokeswoman BARBARA DUNNE says coffee growers in Africa, Asia and Latin Americaare facing the lowest prices in 30 years, while Kraft's net profit last year climbed 80per cent.

Mr DUNNE says Oxfam is challenging Kraft and its shareholders to commit to making thecoffee market work for the poor as well as the rich.

Similar protests have been held in other cities in Australia and around the world asKraft prepares for its annual general meeting in New Jersey in the United States.
